Join Joanna Kessel of Edinburgh Mosaic Studio for her new Introduction to Mosaic workshop. Come on your own or with a friend to enjoy a sociable weekend learning a new skill whilst making a mosaic mirror and abstract landscape mosaic. Your mosaics could become festive presents for friends and loved ones – a unique, handmade gift may be more pertinent than ever this year!

Day 1 will include my usual introduction to the basics of cutting and laying mosaic, good work practice, information about materials and suppliers etc. During the afternoon students will put these new skills into practice and create a small mosaic mirror using stained and vitreous glass and porcelain mosaic. Designs will be provided with colour palettes inspired by Bernat Klein’s woven fabrics, alternatively students could create a simple, unique design of their own.

Day 2 will build on the mosaic skills already acquired and introduce students to the joys of working with reclaimed ceramics. Students will be led through simple step-by-step stages to create a miniature landscape inspired by the shapes and textures of autumn fields, the material qualities and the potential of mosaic as an expressive, creative medium. If you have any small items that tell a story, that you wish to incorporate, please feel free to bring materials along – sea glass, crockery, pottery etc.

Small tray frames will be available to buy from studio stocks.

This workshop is aimed at complete beginners. If spaces are available and others with experience wish to join these activities you would be welcome.

Venue: This autumn I will be teaming up with Jeff Zimmer and David Mola of Glass Lab Edinburgh who will be hosting my workshops at their newly opened premises in Leith. We are excited by the possibility of exploring the many interesting connections between stained glass and mosaic. These autumn workshops will kick-start that creative dialogue and we hope that you will wish to join us on this creative journey. www.glasslabedinburgh.com

COVID-19: We are closely monitoring Scottish Government guidelines to ensure the safe provision of the workshop programme, including limiting class sizes, and carrying out extensive risk assessments.

The mosaic workshops are designed for 8 students, however due to current social distancing restrictions places are limited to 5 participants to facilitate this. Should regulations alter we will advise students of any changes prior to the workshop running. We will also advise students of H&S procedures for attending a workshop.  Please get in touch if you have any specific questions or concerns – we’re here to listen.

Refreshments: Tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided. There are a number of cafes nearby (including The Haven, Milk at Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop and The Shore) however students are welcome to bring lunch to eat at the studio.

Glass Lab is based at North Leith Sands. Parking is limited at the studio but there is plenty at nearby Ocean Terminal.
