Fiscardo, Kefalonia

Join us in Kefalonia for a week of creative explorations in tapestry and mosaic – where the land meets the sea!

Mosaic artist, Joanna Kessel and Tapestry artist, Laura Magliveras have long been inspired by the similarities and contrasts between the ancient art forms of Mosaic and Tapestry. Following our series of exciting co-tutored art holidays in Italy over the past three years, we will be heading to the beautiful Greek island of Kefalonia, which is Laura and Dimitri’s second home.

During the week we will create miniature mosaics and tapestries inspired by the island’s stunning shoreline – where the land meets the sea. We will look at the colours and patterns of the sea and land: azure waters; rich red earth; markings on the creamy white stones; the dynamic strata of the rock formations and, of course, the spaces in between – all a joy for artists!

We will use Laura’s house and beautiful terraces as our studio, from where we can enjoy an expansive view out across the sea to Ithaca and the islands beyond. The house is situated near to the picturesque fishing village of Fiscardo, in the North of the island, where the holiday accommodation is based.

One of the features of the week will be the opportunity to move from mosaic to tapestry and vice versa, or focus on either medium and develop your skills.

Armed with cameras and sketchbooks we will begin the week gathering information at the water’s edge. Back at the house we will transform our research, by working through a series of simple design stages, into cartoons to use as a basis for short creative projects during the week. The first full day will be followed by six morning workshops, leaving you time in the afternoons to relax and explore this beautiful area.

Each morning, and again after lunch, you will be transported to and from Laura’s house. For those who like to walk it’s an enjoyable 40 minutes walk downhill on the way back. Highly recommended for anyone who wishes to explore the area. You may even wish to stop by one of the small beaches to swim in the crystal clear water or sunbathe under the olive trees before walking the last section back to Fiscardo.

In the evenings we will dine in a variety of local restaurants, either sitting around Fiscardo harbour or in the surrounding area. Relaxing and watching the sun slowly setting over the Ionian Sea will be one of the highlights.

“The first word that comes to mind is that the creative holiday was BRILLIANT.  It was one of the best “art-related” holidays I have ever been on.  To have two tutors who work so well together and both so good at it made a huge difference. This was highlighted when we saw the tutors’ representations of each other’s work.  They were both really encouraging, valuing everyone’s creations and creating such a good learning atmosphere. I enjoyed seeing each day the tapestry jewels created as well as everyone’s mosaics.”
